Which Bike Is Right for You?

Every self-drive rental needs an A1 permit, so you already ride. The question is how much.

Honda Blade 110cc rental motorbike in Ha Giang Most rented

110cc · semi-automatic

Honda Blade

No clutch to manage. Light and forgiving on the switchbacks — the safe pick if your riding has mostly been around town.

180,000 ₫ / day

Honda Future 125cc rental motorbike in Ha Giang Best all-rounder

125cc · semi-automatic

Honda Future

Still no clutch, but noticeably more pull on the climbs. The one to take if you're riding two-up.

Honda Winner 150cc rental motorbike in Ha Giang Manual clutch

150cc · manual

A real clutch and proper gears. Worth it if you're used to a geared bike and want engine braking on the descents.

350,000 ₫ / day

Honda XR 150cc dual-sport rental motorbike in Ha Giang Off-road

150cc · manual · dual-sport

Honda XR

High clearance, knobby tyres, long suspension travel. Built for the tracks the others avoid.

550,000 ₫ / day

Semi-Automatic or Manual?

This is the choice that matters, far more than the engine size. Get it wrong and you'll spend three days fighting the bike instead of looking at the mountains.

Semi-automatic

Honda Blade 110 · Honda Future 125

  • No clutch lever. You change gear with your left foot, that's all
  • The bike can't stall on you at a junction or on a climb
  • If you've ridden a scooter in Bali or Thailand, you already know how
  • Learnable in about ten minutes in the car park before you leave

This is what most riders on the loop are on, and what we'd suggest unless you genuinely ride at home.

Manual

Honda Winner 150 · Honda XR 150

  • Clutch lever in your left hand, gears under your left foot
  • Far more control on steep descents — engine braking does the work
  • You can stall it, and hill starts on a loaded bike take practice
  • Only worth taking if you've ridden a geared bike before, elsewhere

The right choice for experienced riders, and the only real option for the rougher off-road sections.

Not sure which side you fall on? Tell us what you've ridden and we'll say honestly.

An International Driving Permit (1968 convention) with an A1 stamp is required for every self-drive rental, whichever bike you take.

Before You Ride: the Licence

To ride any of our bikes yourself, you need an International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 convention, with an A1 stamp, along with your original licence from home. This applies to every self-drive rental, whichever bike you take.

Get it before you fly. It's issued by the licensing authority in your own country and can't be obtained in Vietnam. The 1978 version, which some countries also issue, is not the one accepted here.

Police checks are common on the loop. Not occasional — common. Riding without a valid permit means a fine, and it can also mean your travel insurance won't cover you if something happens.

Bring both documents to pick-up. The permit alone isn't valid without the home licence it refers to.

Not sure whether yours qualifies, or your country doesn't issue the 1968 permit? Send us a photo of it and we'll tell you where you stand. If self-driving isn't an option for you, our Easy Rider tours let someone else do the riding — no permit needed.

What Comes With Every Bike

Same for all four models, no matter how many days you take it for.

  • HelmetFull-size, not the token plastic cap

  • RaincoatYou will use it. Ha Giang decides, not the forecast

  • Knee & elbow protectionsAsk for them at pick-up, they're free

  • Serviced bikeChecked between every rental, not once a season

  • Paper map & route briefingWhere to stop, where to fuel up, what to skip

  • Third-party liability insuranceCovers damage to others — not to the bike itself

Worth being clear about: the included insurance covers damage you cause to other people. Damage to the bike you're riding is covered only by the comprehensive option, which is charged per day and varies by model — from 80,000 ₫ on the Blade to 250,000 ₫ on the XR.

International Driving Permit 1968 with an A1 stamp is required and mandatory for every self-driven rental. Please bring it (and your original license) on pick up.

Police checks are very common on the Ha Giang Loop.

Additional information: unlike in Europe (for example) a car license isn't enough to drive a 125CC. You need a A1 stamp on your international license.

No refund will be issued if you cannot present a valid International Driving Permit with the A1 stamp at pick up.
